Mission

The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York (RCINY) is the American-based antenna of RCI.

The primary mission of RCINY is to connect Romanian and American culture and to encourage dynamic interactions between creative individuals, organizations and ideas.

RCINY supports three levels of cultural action:

  • Support to young Romanian artists and producers to present new work in the New York scene and to collaborate with US based cultural organizations;
  • Support to outstanding figures of Romanian culture to remain perennial symbols of European and national identity as well as internationally acclaimed and recognized personalities of universal value;
  • Support to American organizations inspired to host, curate and engage with new or existing aollaborations with Romanian artists and academics.

RCINY also initiates long-term, sustainable programs such as:

  • New Drama;
  • The annual Romanian Film Festival in New York;
  • eyeCon:text, dedicated to visual arts;
  • Communism Never Happened, a program dedicated to the analysis and documentation of the recent past;
  • The Missing Arm of Venus, on Romanian poetry in translation;
  • TrafficArt, on sharing art and information traffic.

RCINY also acts as a mediator and catalyst for artists, journalists, publishers and professionals who would like to travel to Romania for cultural events or artistic research.

RCINY constantly works with an important range of American and Romanian partner organizations and has an ongoing line of action regarding the exploration and encouragement of a stronger visibility, through US media, of Romanian arts and intellectually outstanding achievements.
